Hong-Kong, 4th. July, 1898.

Referring to your letter of the 29th.ultimo, I am to

acquaint you that the Government has received no information

from the Secretary of State to the effect that the Chartered

Bank had been authorized to increase its note issue (presuma bly) in Hong-Kong by the sum of $250,000, and cannot at pre- sent therefore depute any officers to certify to the deposit

of cash security against the amount of such issue.
